Welcome to the Northwestern State University Euphonium-Tuba Studio!
The NSU Euphonium-Tuba studio is composed of two full-time faculty members and talented undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Masahito Kuroda teaches euphonium and tuba students, and Dr. J. Mark Thompson teaches trombone and tuba students. In addition to weekly private lessons, students are actively involved in various performing ensembles such as the NSU Euphonium-Tuba Ensemble, NSU Wind Symphony, NSU Concert Bands, NSU Marching Band, as well as NSU Jazz Orchestra. The studio holds weekly studio classes that cover the various topics on euphonium/tuba playing, teaching, and repertoire in masterclass format.
The studio alumni include regional and national award winners of the Music Teachers National Association Competitions, semi-finalists in national and international competitions, university instructors, and highly successful public-school band directors.
The NSU Euphonium-Tuba Ensemble was established in 2002, and currently consists of 25 active members. Dr. Masahito Kuroda directs the ensemble. In 2015, our ensemble performed at the South-Central Regional Euphonium Tuba Conference, world premiering the works utilizing the lesser utilized instruments such as bass trumpets, double-bell euphonium, alto horn, cimbasso, and mute with electronic effector. The ensemble holds a concert every semester challenging not only works originally written for euphonium-tuba group, but also orchestral and choral transcriptions, as well as Jazz and beyond to study the style and expression in greater musical spectrum.

Welcome to the Northwestern State University Flute Studio!
The Northwestern State University Flute Studio is comprised of the flute students of Dr. Dennette McDermott, Professor of Flute. These students, most of whom are Music Majors and Minors, help make up the flute sections within the three NSU Concert Bands, the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra, and the “Spirit of Northwestern” Marching Band. The Flute Studio is active in performances throughout the school year including the annual NSU Flute Masterclass. Whether it is ensemble concerts or personal recitals, these students are actively performing for the Natchitoches community. For more information contact Dr. Dennette McDermott.
Students who desire to become a flute major at Northwestern State must audition for Dr. McDermott prior to admittance. This audition will also determine scholarship awards. For more detailed information on the available scholarships and service awards, refer to the School of Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) website.
